Smallest Ever Weld Trailing Shield®

When welding titanium using the GTAW / TIG process, the gas shield from the welding torch needs extending for protection from oxidation and for productivity. Although welders will use a larger than normal gas cup to provide a big surface area of protection, this still limits the speed at which they can move the welding torch.

To provide additional surface protection and in order to weld faster, Huntingdon Fusion Techniques HFT® manufacture a range of Weld Trailing Shields®, effectively long gas cups fixed onto and dragged along behind the welding torch, which ensures the weld remains under an argon gas shield until the metal has cooled below its oxidation temperature.

Ron Sewell, Chairman for HFT® said: “Professionally manufactured Weld Trailing Shields® are usually around 100 – 150 mm long as standard, with specials for automatic welding being as long as 450 mm (17”), although many applications require smaller Weld Trailing Shields®.

With the lack of commercially available small Weld Trailing Shields®, users have been required to fabricate their own using innovative methods, however HFT® have now designed and developed the smallest Weld Trailing Shield® available at only 40 mm (1.6”) long.”

These lightweight devices simply attach to all standard manual or automatic TIG/GTAW and Plasma/PAW welding torches and will at least double the area being shielded as well as allowing access to tiny spaces.

For manual welding, the welder finds that with this low cost tool, there is no difficulty in dragging it along the surface being welded. One further benefit is that it carries the welding torch at 90o to the weld.

With automatic welding machines it is possible to raise the welding speed dramatically and enjoy the major benefits of automatic welding. Weld Trailing Shields® are also manufactured in flat format for sheet metal welding.

Supplementary Gas Shielding with an Argweld® Weld Trailing Shield

Eliminating oxidation and discolouration when welding stainless and duplex steels as well as titanium, zirconium and nickel alloys is crucial in many industries today, because of improving quality control procedures. Welds have to be free from metallurgical defects otherwise they can potentially be rejected, often leading to a significant loss in time and resources.

The quality of welds on tubes, pipes and flat sheet metal can be dramatically improved with the addition of a low cost Weld Trailing Shield®.

Huntingdon Fusion Techniques HFT® have designed and developed Argweld® flat and radiused Trailing Shields® which simply attach onto any TIG/GTAW, PAW/Plasma and MIG/GMAW welding torch, providing an additional inert gas coverage during welding of reactive metals where discolouration or oxidation needs to be eliminated.

Luke Keane, Technical Sales Manager for HFT® said: “The addition of a low cost Trailing Shields® ensures that the weld stays under a protective argon gas coverage, while the hot weld metal is cooling, preventing it from oxidising on contact with air. The materials mentioned above are chosen for their corrosion resistant properties in particular and if they are then allowed to oxidise during the weld cycle, expensive post welding cleaning techniques become necessary.”

“These lightweight, easy to use Trailing Shields® pay for themselves in just one weld! They are perfect for manual welders, as well as well as automatic machines by helping to cover the weld with an inert gas coverage during and after welding, producing bright, shiny, oxide free welds every time.”

The Trailing Shield® is connected to the argon gas supply, diffusing gas evenly without turbulence through the multi layers of stainless steel mesh built into the body of the shield. At each side, replaceable silicone rubber side shields provide a barrier to prevent the argon escaping sideways and remaining over the weld metal. As the welding torch is moved forward, the weld remains under an argon gas shield until the welded metal has cooled below its oxidation temperature.

Trailing Shields® are reusable, with a temperature resistance of up to 230ºC. They prevent re-work, eliminate the need for an expensive purge chamber and allow for faster welding.

For manual welding, the welder finds that with this lightweight and low cost tool, there is no difficulty in dragging it along the surface being welded. One further benefit is that it carries the welding torch at 90º to the weld.

Radiused Shields are designed to suit the exact diameter of the pipe or vessels being welded. Flat models are available for sheet and plate welding.

HFT’s low cost Trailing Shield

Huntington Fusion Techniques’ (HFT®) low-cost Weld Trailing Shield can dramatically improve the quality of welds on tubes, pipes and flat sheet metal.

Euronext launches trading platform to ward against high-frequency traders

February 15, 2020

Listen to this article

Euronext, the European exchanges operator, is to follow its main rivals in launching a share trading platform for institutional investors who want to shield their trades for large blocks of shares from aggressive high-frequency traders.

The Paris-based group said on Wednesday it would launch the service in the middle of the year, as it delivered its full-year results.

Rivals like the London Stock Exchange Group and Bats Europe have launched similar venues in the last year, in response to incoming European markets rules that allow fund managers to trade sizeable deals away from the public market. Euronext’s venue has been developed in conjunction with Ax Trading, a US financial technology group.

For the year to December 31, Euronext said revenue fell 4.3 per cent to €496.4m, hit by low market volatility. Pre-tax profits rose from €238.6m to €264m on a series of cost-cutting measures, which boosted margins.

Its unveiling is the latest in a series of steps for Euronext as it seeks new revenue streams since regaining its independence in 2020.

It has agreed to buy the French arm of LCH, the clearing house, from the London Stock Exchange if the LSE completes its deal to merge with Deutsche Borse, for €510m.

It also announced the launch of an electronic platform that can help customers to finance assets and swap collateral that they need to back commodities and fixed income trades

The company said market conditions last year were marked by below trend volatility with notable trading spikes around the UK’s Brexit vote in July and the US election in November.

Britain’s looming exit from the EU has also raised fresh questions about London’s role as a major euro clearing derivatives hub after calls from senior European politicians for the EU to euro repatriate clearing activity to the continent. Any such move could cost the City around 83,000 according to one estimate.

Chairman and chief executive Stéphane Boujnah said the upcoming year “will be a critical year for our industry landscape”.

“These results demonstrate Euronext’s continuous capability to service our shareholders and customers, and to deliver value against a tough trading environment”.

“We will remain focused on executing our Agility for Growth strategy and maximizing opportunities that may arise, as we did with the agreement to potentially acquire LCH.Clearnet S.A.”

Euronext said it has achieved €15.6m of savings since the second quarter of the year as part of a cost-cutting drive. It will propose a dividend of €1.42 per share, a rise from €1.24, at its annual general meeting in May.
